I’m going to let you in on a secret: I’m not very consistent when it comes to keeping things clean. Even my language. I clean up my act when the microphone’s on- because I’m a professional!- but if you’ve had any interaction with me in public… you know I slip up fairly often. I think there’s actually a bit of a correlation between how often I use profanity and how long I’ve been in radio. Trust me when I say: getting out of my comfortable and familiar New York-ese has been a massive challenge. I’d like to think I’m doing better.
But this post isn’t about verbiage and fun words you can’t say in front of your grandparents. I’m a mess in pretty much every other physical aspect. In my defense, I know where most things are. I like to think of it as “organized chaos.” An example:
Welcome to the KGMI Newsroom. Population: way too many sticky notes. There’s probably more hidden under those papers.
Anything that I don’t immediately need in a drawer. Anyone with a similar organization style knows that the drawers are where everything goes to die. The phrase “out of sight, out of mind” really gets taken literally here. Until earlier today, I completely forgot about a big bag of looseleaf tea someone had given me. Why? It was in one of the drawers that I forgot about. It’s been shacking up with a bottle of Gatorade, one single packet of a different tea, a pair of backup headphones, and a whole box of N95 masks. Had I not checked in there for some paperwork earlier, I genuinely would’ve forgotten that all of those things existed.
Pivoting from the workspace to my home… things get more complicated. And that’s what I’m hoping to tackle this week.
I’ll be updating this post regularly as the cleaning commences. Stay tuned.
